Behind the Badge: How Volunteering at NSPM 2026 Became the Ultimate PM Masterclass
Based on an interview with Haidee Bustillos, Volunteer Committee for NSPM 2026

The energy at a major industry event is undeniably electric. But when hundreds of project professionals converged at the stunning Shangri-La Mactan in Cebu this past August 14-15, the real magic wasn't just happening on the main stage—it was operating in the shadows.
The 2026 National Symposium on Project Management (NSPM) was one of the Chapter's most ambitious undertakings to date. Guided by the theme, "From Profession to Purpose: Building the Nation Through Project Success," the event featured simultaneous knowledge tracks, high-profile keynotes, and a sprawling exhibition floor.

To understand the sheer scale of executing such a deliverable, we sat down with Haidee Bustillos, a dedicated PMI-PH volunteer who experienced the symposium through two distinct, high-pressure lenses: B2B sponsor management and frontline delegate support.
Having previously organized the successful PMI Philippines Cebu Annual Fellowship night at the Holiday Inn in December 2025, Haidee was no stranger to the demands of local chapter events. However, the national scale of NSPM 2026 required an entirely different level of agility.

Inside this Issue
In this special NSPM issue, we explore what it means to lead with purpose—going beyond standard frameworks to actively build the nation through project success. We go behind the scenes with Haidee Bustillos to see how volunteering became the ultimate PM masterclass, trace the milestone legacy of the National Symposium, and spotlight Dino Faustino's journey in purpose-driven leadership. Plus, we unpack five key takeaways on leading responsibly with AI and share the best photo snapshots from Cebu.

Phase 1: Initiation, Setup, and Stakeholder

The exhibition floor at Shangri-La was a dynamic environment of moving parts. From troubleshooting logistical bottlenecks on the fly to managing sudden baseline changes in booth requirements, the volunteer team had to be responsive.
"When an attendee is lost, running late for a session, or overwhelmed by the schedule, they are essentially experiencing a 'project risk.' Stepping in to provide clear, calm communication—turning someone's stressful morning into a smooth, positive day—made every single busy moment worth it."
Management Haidee’s deployment began long before the first delegate lanyard was printed. During the crucial setup phase, she was embedded with the sponsorship team, working directly with corporate partners to bring their complex exhibition booths to life.
"In project management terms, this was a masterclass in high-stakes stakeholder engagement and rapid scope management," Haidee recalls. "Sponsors are critical to the success and sustainability of our chapter events. Getting their booths ready on a tight timeline required a highly agile mindset."

"It was a real-time lesson in adaptability. It was undeniably hard work, but collaborating closely with these industry leaders to build the exhibition hall fostered an instant camaraderie. We were one integrated project team, sprinting toward a hard launch deadline."
Phase 2: Execution and Frontline Agile Response
Once the symposium doors opened and the keynote music swelled, the execution phase officially began. For Haidee, this meant transitioning from behind-the-scenes logistics to high-touch customer service on the main floor. Her primary deliverables shifted to helping attendees navigate the complex, multi-track schedules and answering rapid-fire questions from VIPs and delegates alike.
"Managing those diverse needs on the fly was basically a hands-on practicum in live project management," Haidee explains. She points out that standard PM frameworks apply just as much to human interactions as they do to software deployment.
Project Closure: Purpose Over Profession
Looking back at the retrospective of NSPM 2026, Haidee believes the ultimate takeaway wasn't just the successful execution of an event—it was the profound value of service. Volunteering for the PMI Philippines Chapter allows members to apply their PM toolkit in a dynamic, unscripted environment while actively giving back.
For any PMI-PH member looking to expand their network, earn valuable PDUs, and test their leadership skills in the field, Haidee’s advice is clear and actionable: "I cannot recommend volunteering enough. Your next great project might just be helping your Chapter succeed."

"We talk a lot about 'building the nation' as a concept. But when you volunteer, you realize that you are actively building the community that builds the nation. It is incredibly fulfilling to be part of the engine that makes events like NSPM 2026 run."
Phase 3: The Cultural Exchange and Community Building
Beyond the technical schedules, NSPM 2026 was also a celebration of connection, highlighted by the world-renowned Cebuano hospitality. The volunteer team didn't just manage schedules; they managed the experience. From guiding delegates to networking mixers overlooking the Mactan waters to facilitating introductions between seasoned PMPs and young professionals, volunteers were the bridge that connected the community.
"You get to see the human side of project management," Haidee notes with a smile. "You aren't just looking at a Gantt chart; you are watching real people build the networks that will define the next decade of our profession."
